When was the last time you took a bath? If it has been a while, what were the reasons? For me it was due to time. From the time it took to fill the bath to how long I would be in the bath. There is a reason why a bath is listed on spa menus nowadays, we have equated bath time as something leisurely which equals time that could be better spent elsewhere, so when we pay for it, we think it is a luxurious experience. But as you'll see below, taking a bath is actually very beneficial for your health.
1. It helps shift your mood and increase your positive vibes.
Taking a warm bath increases your mood while reducing feelings of depression and those pesky blah moments, simply because just for a little while you're taking time out of your day and choosing yourself. It also activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for relaxation.
2. Warm baths helps joints and muscles.
Heat helps to loosen up inflamed joints, and adding in Epsom salt along with other mineral salts, also helps to decrease joint pain, check out these bath teas that are jam packed with salts that can help you. Studies have shown there has been a reduction in pain in people with fibromyalgia (I can definitely attest to this) as well as arthritis.
3. Baths can help burn calories.
If you have ever been in a sauna, you definitely know heat can burn off calories. Taking an hour long bath (though I would limit bath time to 10-30 minutes) can help to burn up to 130 calories. You could sit in a warm bath, reading a book with a glass of wine or a cup of tea while burning calories, sounds like the perfect way to end the day.
4. Warm baths can help soothe skin.
Keyword is WARM, do not burn your skin off, please. Soaking for 10-15 minutes in the tub and putting on a great moisturizer (hint hint: You can check them out here) on damp skin to lock in moisture is a great way to soothe your skin. You can also add Colloidal oatmeal, lavender oil, or Epsom salt to your bath to also help decrease inflammation orrr.. you could buy Meditate Bath Tea and have all the ingredients you need and more in one product.
There you have it, four reasons why baths are better than showers and how they aren't luxurious but they are seriously beneficial to not only your mental health but your physical health as well. Comment below if you're going to add bath time to your routine (at least once or twice a week).
